During the National Year of Reading, one school has placed reading firmly at the centre of its community. Through a carefully developed library, purposeful reading spaces and the use of Ready Steady Read Together, pupils at Sacred Heart Primary School are discovering not only how to understand texts but also how much joy books can bring.
Writing remains one of the most challenging aspects of learning for many children. While some pupils appear to develop confidence and fluency naturally, others find writing frustrating, overwhelming and difficult to master. In the first episode of Ready Steady Talk, "Unlocking the Struggling Writer", literacy expert Alex Quigley joined the podcast to explore why writing presents such a challenge and what teachers can do to support pupils who struggle.
Drawing on his extensive work in literacy, including Closing the Writing Gap and Why Learning Fails, Quigley offers a practical and evidence-informed perspective on the barriers that hold young writers back. Throughout the conversation, he emphasises that writing difficulties are rarely the result of a single weakness. Instead, they emerge from a complex interaction of foundational skills, knowledge, motivation and self-belief.
