Primary MAT focused on raising literacy standards through consistent resources and CPD support

-C. Belisari, Head of Consultancy & Professional Development

In 2024, Literacy Counts partnered with Chester Diocesan Academies Trust (CDAT) to deliver a targeted writing project across their family of 18 primary schools in Cheshire, the Wirral and Greater Manchester. With a trust-wide focus on raising writing outcomes and improving classroom practice, this bespoke CPD initiative focused on getting the writing fundamentals right across EYFS and Key Stage 2.

As part of our ‘Writing: Getting the Basics Right’ training series, we supported over 2,000 pupils by equipping teachers with the skills and strategies needed to develop confident, fluent writers. Training was tailored to year group needs, with a dual focus:

  • EYFS and Year 1: Supporting oral rehearsal, phonics application and handwriting fluency for novice writers

  • Years 2–6: Strengthening spelling, handwriting and diagnostic assessment to close gaps and accelerate progress

Teachers across the trust engaged with our Reflecting on Outcomes diagnostic tool to identify key areas for development, with each session offering clear, actionable strategies for classroom impact.

“Our schools have really appreciated the Literacy Counts writing training. It has been so useful to spend time reflecting on getting the basics right in each year group... The training, tailored for each year group, will impact writing outcomes for pupils across Chester Diocesan Academies Trust.”
S Riley, Senior School Improvement Officer, CDAT

Bespoke Consultancy from Literacy Counts Experts

Led by our expert team — Claire Belisari, Hannah Gaynor, Jo Garrity and Louise Robinson — the training offered CDAT schools a bespoke, trust-wide literacy solution rooted in research and classroom practice.

“The bespoke training we planned and delivered for CDAT came from a deep understanding of the trust-wide needs that were emerging around writing... We explored research evidence, key strategies, supports and scaffolds to overcome barriers and enable success... The training had an immediate and wide-reaching impact, benefiting every school, every teacher, and ultimately, every pupil in the MAT.”
Claire Belisari, Head of Consultancy & Professional Development

What Teachers Said About the Training

The impact was felt immediately at classroom level.

  • A Year 3 teacher from Bredbury St Mark’s CE Primary School praised Consultant Jo Garrity’s practical advice on pupil ownership, saying it helped them encourage children to self-identify misspellings, rather than relying on correction.

  • The Reception Lead at Stretton St Matthew’s CE Primary School described Louise Robinson’s EYFS training as “insightful and expert-led,” and has since begun using dictation to support writing fluency and consistency.

Cluster leaders accessing CPD on reading, writing and oracy development through Literacy Counts

The Central Collaborative Knowsley Cluster has worked in long-term partnership with Literacy Counts to improve writing outcomes and develop confident, well-supported teachers across its schools. Through the adoption of our evidence-based writing scheme, Ready Steady Write, and a series of bespoke CPD programmes, schools within the cluster have achieved greater curriculum consistency, enhanced vocabulary teaching and more effective classroom practice. From writing moderation and reading for pleasure to their latest project focused on editing and writer reflection, the collaboration continues to drive sustained literacy improvement across EYFS to KS2.

"Adopting the writing resources from Literacy Counts has provided our schools with a fresh and consistent approach to teaching writing. The high-quality texts have broadened both pupils’ and teachers’ knowledge of children’s literature and introduced an explicit focus on vocabulary. The resources’ clear, sequential pathway ensures that challenge and high standards remain central, while the content is easy to follow, manage, and adapt to suit the needs of all children.

Children are familiar with the format of the units as they progress through school, and Working Walls have been a fantastic tool to support their independence and skill development. Teachers have valued the example texts for saving time and providing excellent models of writing. The training, including follow-up ‘pit stop’ sessions, has been invaluable, particularly for ECTs. It has strengthened teachers’ understanding of curriculum expectations and their ability to adapt the planning effectively.

Our partnership with Literacy Counts has been a key part of our longer-term strategy to improve writing outcomes. The combination of practical resources, high-quality CPD, and tailored support has enabled us to embed a consistent approach across schools, ensuring that teachers feel confident and supported in delivering impactful writing lessons."

FAQ’S

  • Consistency is key and one of the most successful aspects of Ready Steady Write.  It begins with a writing sequence that starts in EYFS and research-informed approaches that support all year groups.  Every school is able to deliver high-quality writing instruction with the same ambition, progression and expectations. Built around rich, vocabulary-driven texts and explicit teaching sequences, the scheme creates a shared language of writing across classrooms, while still allowing schools the flexibility to meet the needs of their pupils.

What sets Ready Steady Write apart for MATs, is the strength of its leadership and assessment support. The leadership part of the membership is comprehensive, enabling trust leaders to effectively embed, monitor and evaluate writing across all schools.  This includes audits of practice, systems for success, adaptive teaching, supporting consistent practice and many other features.

The scheme includes clear progression documents, consistent assessment frameworks, moderation materials and comprehensive CPD for teachers and subject leaders (including videos of pedagogy), enabling trust leaders to monitor standards confidently across all schools. Combined with reduced teacher workload, strong child engagement and proven impact on writing outcomes, it offers a scalable model for sustainable trust-wide improvement.

  • Effective literacy implementation across a Multi-Academy Trust is clear, consistent and strategically aligned. Successful MATs establish a shared vision for literacy that is understood across every school, with agreed approaches to curriculum design, pedagogy, assessment and intervention. Rather than operating as isolated schools with differing expectations, effective trusts create a coherent literacy journey from Early Years through to Year 6, ensuring progression is consistent and all children have access to high-quality teaching and ambitious texts. Strong implementation also depends on sustained professional development, robust moderation processes and leadership systems that allow trust leaders to monitor impact, identify gaps and support continuous improvement across schools.

Crucially, effective implementation is not about being rigid, it is about creating consistency in core principles while allowing schools the flexibility to respond to their own children and contexts. The most successful MATs invest in evidence-informed approaches that reduce variability in teaching quality, strengthen teacher expertise and improve outcomes sustainably over time. This is where the Ready Steady Literacy suite is particularly powerful. Through aligned programmes in writing, reading, spelling and phonics, combined with comprehensive CPD, assessment support and leadership guidance, Literacy Counts helps MATs establish a coherent, scalable literacy strategy across every school.

  • Ensuring consistent progression across a Multi-Academy Trust requires a clearly defined, shared curriculum framework that sets out how knowledge, skills and understanding build incrementally from Early Years through to the end of primary. MAT leaders need to establish agreed progression expectations for reading, writing, spelling and phonics, alongside common assessment principles so that standards are interpreted consistently across all schools. This is strengthened when curriculum design is sequenced coherently, ensuring that children revisit and deepen key concepts over time rather than experiencing disconnected or variable learning journeys between schools.

Equally important is the role of leadership systems in securing consistency. Trust-wide moderation, subject leader expertise and ongoing professional development ensure that teachers and leaders share an understanding of what progression looks like in practice. When leaders regularly review data, sampling and child work across schools, they can identify gaps early and target support effectively, ensuring no school develops in isolation. The most effective MATs underpin this work with a high-quality, research-informed literacy approach such as the Ready Steady Literacy suite, which provides structured progression across reading, writing, phonics and spelling, alongside robust assessment and CPD. his enables trusts to maintain consistency at scale while encouraging sustained improvement in child outcomes across every school.

  • Successfully implementing a literacy programme across a Multi-Academy Trust requires a carefully planned approach, effective leadership and sustained professional development. MAT leaders need to establish a clear implementation strategy from the outset, ensuring that there is a shared understanding of purpose, pedagogy and expected outcomes across all schools.

Sustained success also relies on building capacity within and across schools. This includes investing in subject leader development, providing high-quality CPD and embedding robust systems for monitoring impact, such as lesson visits, work scrutiny, and trust-wide moderation. When these elements are in place, programmes are far more likely to be implemented with fidelity and sustained over time, leading to improved outcomes for children. This is where the Ready Steady Literacy suite is particularly effective, offering MATs a fully aligned approach across reading, writing, phonics and spelling, alongside structured training, assessment support and leadership guidance.  All of this enables trusts to implement a literacy programme with consistency, confidence and long-term impact across all schools.

  • Ready Steady Write is easy to implement across a Multi-Academy Trust because it has been deliberately designed to remove the common barriers that make whole-trust curriculum rollouts complex. Rather than requiring schools to build their own planning, progression, and resources from scratch, it provides a fully sequenced, evidence-informed writing curriculum with clearly structured units, consistent pedagogical routines, and high-quality model texts. This ensures every school is working from the same secure foundation, has the same high expectations, uses the same teaching approaches and secures strong child outcomes across the trust.

MATs are also supported with comprehensive CPD, leadership guidance, and implementation training that helps ensure fidelity without adding unnecessary workload for schools. One notable element of the implementation process is the Leadership Day, where subject leaders and SLT members are supported in becoming experts in the resource.  Steps to successful implementation have been carefully mapped out, to fully support those driving literacy development. Standardised progression frameworks, assessment support, and moderation materials also make it easier for leaders to monitor consistency and impact across multiple settings. Combined with its clear structure and teacher-friendly design, Ready Steady Write enables trusts to implement at scale quickly and confidently, while still allowing schools to adapt teaching to their context.

  • Ready Steady Literacy resources provide a coherent, long-term framework for teaching reading, writing, phonics and spelling, rather than a collection of disconnected programmes. Each strand of the suite is carefully sequenced and underpinned by a consistent pedagogical approach, ensuring that children experience cumulative progression in knowledge, vocabulary and skills as they move through their education.  For example, in our Ready Steady Write programme, the EYFS element is a comprehensive communication and language resource (Bett Award winner).  Children focus on foundational skills and knowledge, learn story songs, understand how to build a sentence and apply their growing phonics knowledge and handwriting. As they move into Y1 they continue to secure these basic skills, ensuring that children are ready when more complex writing tasks are introduced.  As the children move through school, their writing is developed through meaningful writing tasks, and the adaptive teaching and regular purposeful assessment ensures all children are able to achieve and thrive.

Sustained impact is further secured through the structured support that accompanies the resources. MATs benefit from ongoing CPD, leadership training, assessment guidance and moderation materials that enable teachers and leaders to continuously refine practice and monitor progress effectively.

  • A Multi-Academy Trust can ensure its writing provision fully aligns with the UK statutory curriculum by establishing a clearly mapped, sequenced approach that explicitly reflects National Curriculum expectations for writing across each year group. This depends on a shared trust-wide framework that defines progression in composition, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and transcriptional skills from Early Years through to Year 6. Effective MATs also ensure that curriculum design builds cumulatively, so that statutory expectations are not only covered, but revisited and embedded securely over time.

Alongside curriculum design, consistency of implementation is essential. MAT leaders need robust systems for monitoring coverage, assessing standards, and moderating writing across schools to ensure that statutory expectations are being met in practice, not just on paper. This includes ensuring teachers have access to high-quality models, clear progression documents, and structured guidance that supports accurate curriculum interpretation. The Ready Steady Write programme supports this by providing a fully sequenced writing curriculum that is explicitly aligned to National Curriculum expectations, ensuring coverage of statutory requirements in a coherent and progressive way. With its detailed planning, consistent pedagogical approach, and strong emphasis on foundational skills through EYFS and Key Stage 1, it helps MATs guarantee that children are fully prepared to meet and exceed statutory writing expectations as they move through school.

  • MATs can establish a shared, trust-wide understanding of what high-quality writing looks like at each stage of development, supported by consistent assessment criteria and regular moderation activity. This begins with agreeing a common framework for progression in writing, including composition, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and transcription, so that all schools are working towards the same expectations. Standardisation is strengthened when teachers have access to clear exemplification materials and when professional dialogue is focused on consistent interpretation of standards, rather than individual school benchmarks.

Effective MATs also embed regular, structured moderation cycles across schools, enabling teachers and leaders to compare judgements, scrutinise child work together, and agree standards over time. This not only improves consistency but also builds assessment confidence across the trust. Central leadership is essential, ensuring that data is interpreted consistently and that any variation in standards is quickly identified and addressed. The Ready Steady Write programme supports this process through detailed progression documents and structured assessment guidance that help schools align judgements. The most powerful documents that are included in the membership are the Moderation Exemplification documents, which show Working Towards, Expected and Greater Depth for all year groups. These have been greatly welcomed by schools who use them to support a strong understanding of what the standards look like in practice and how to approach assessment in a consistent way.  All of this enables MATs to build reliable, trust-wide moderation systems that improve accuracy and consistency in writing assessment over time.
