Purposeful Talk, Powerful Literacy: The Development of Oracy in a Primary Classroom

How can UK primary teachers deliver high-quality oracy provision that dramatically improves pupils’ spoken language, reading comprehension, writing quality and overall English outcomes?

This course equips primary teachers and leaders with practical, evidence-informed approaches to prioritise oracy across the school day. It is grounded in the National Curriculum for English, The Reading Framework, The Writing Framework and Ofsted’s emphasis on spoken language as a driver of literacy and academic success. Teachers will explore how explicit teaching of oracy directly supports reading, writing and vocabulary development, while building confident, articulate communicators.

Course aims:

  • Consider guidance on ways to create an explicit curriculum for developing spoken language

  • Develop an understanding of progression across the primary phase

  • Explore strategies to support learning

  • Consider the role of the teacher in developing effective interaction

  • Explore effective assessments of spoken language
