How can schools develop confident writers through explicit sentence teaching, purposeful composition and meaningful assessment?

This course supports English subject leaders and teachers in strengthening sentence-level teaching through evidence-informed practice.

Course aims:

  • Develop understanding of the role of sentence construction within writing development and composition

  • Explore evidence-informed approaches to teaching sentences, including modelling, oral rehearsal, sentence combining and guided practice

  • Consider how vocabulary, reading and spoken language support sentence development and writing fluency

  • Explore approaches to planning and assessing writing that support cohesion, independence and purposeful composition

  • Strengthen subject leader confidence in monitoring progression and improving sentence-level teaching across the school
